All this while I have been resisting my husband who is way too particular about "appropriateness"of dress code for our little one as young as two..

I guess its better to establish her idea of OK and OK-not this early to avoid any ugly power struggles later..

say what? I'm so confused honestly, all this while I thought he was overdoing it..

hey..i've written abt this many times. its very hard to blinker your child and we have young children right now, so peer pressure is strong. but i keep tv off right now and to a minimum later.

i dont really criticise other children or women dressed inappropriately but i do believe that i will tell my child something is not appropriate at a certain age. its the same as my bad language theory. i can wear deep necklines, but i am also allowed to drive, light the gas and chop with a knife. my child needs to wait and obey until i think its the right time...

i dont wear thongs everyday, but i can see why those who hate pantylines wear them, so if my daughter asks, i hope to be able to tell her she has to wait till a certain age. of course this is all just talk right now. lets see where it goes!

and belated birthday wishes.. hope it was a good one!

Tankq, tankq, tankq Boo.

Cee kay, welcome here.

Reg the post, Choxbox, Shobana, COS, Kowsalya, Cee Kay, SquigglesMom, Boo thanks for reading and commenting. Thanks for your time.

At first I was quite disillusioned when I wrote this post. But after reading Cee Kay's comment a new light kind of dawned on me. External influences have always been there, right? Sure our mom's would have their own list when we were growing up. But some how we turned out okay, so will today's kids :) They key is like Choxbox says patience and optimism.

Cee Kay please do a post on this. Would love to read your thoughts on this.

You're right, there is excessive sexualisation and the subliminal messages are the ones that are more scary because they are harder to spot and therefore more difficult to take action against.
I think we can individually make a stand by not endorsing certain products or brands. It's easy sometimes to give in to our child's demands but that's where the true test of parenting lies.
Sigh.... I guess it's going to get tougher.

Excellent post! Yes, I am bothered by the onslaught of "sexism" on kids. Very much so. But I don't think parents don't have a choice. I have been able to buy simple, yet elegant stuff, which is also quite affordable for my 9 year old till now. There are plenty of stores to buy from - Macys, JC Penny, Kohls, Bobs Stores (I think it is in very few locations though). I agree there is a barrage of such clothes in the stores and a kid is bound to get tempted, as did my daughter. but I explained to her that the clothes that had such words written across the chest or the bum aren't very modest and I wouldn't want her to wear them. She understood. I bought a few other t-shirts for her with some funny, harmless quotes on them (like - "I see your mouth moving but all i hear is blah, blah, blah" and "Whatever!!") She loves them and is more willing to hear me out when I say I don't like some particular clothes.

I don't think stopping to wear thongs ourselves (if one does wear them) or expecting teachers or other adults around our kids to stop doing so is reasonable. This can be taken as an excellent opportunity to teach our kids the concept of age-appropriateness of everything, be it rules, curfew, clothes, toys or books.

I agree with you that we, as parents, do not have much control over what kind of friends our children choose, but we do have the power to give them the right kind of foundation to begin with when they are still under our control and enthralled by everything we say or do. That would be roughly up to the age of 5 years or so :D

Sometimes we even need to let them try things out and decide if they like them or not. My daughter wanted to buy a set of bikini-style paties. I was dead against the idea but decided to choose my battles carefully and let her buy it. She wore it for a few days and declared she didn't like it because it was uncomfortable. There! Problem solved :)

OK - this is becoming a post in itself. Must..... stop...... now.....

I don't know how far I will be successful but when she was around 3 or 4 and started to watch T.V - I used to comment on the actress or the hostess dress as yucky if its was too vulgar and she has picked this up. now when she even sees some women dressed in a vulgar or a glamorous way - she comments yucky and stops watching. peer influence will be next thing i need to watch :)
