The Print Lover nailed it. She says “Vyasa + Pillaiyar = Mahabaratha Twitter bird -> Shashi Tharoor?” And exactimo!
I have read Mahabaratha by many different authors and that was instrumental in me picking up this book. It took me a few pages to understand the allegory, but I was proud and pleased as plum that I did it all by myself without running to Wikipedia. Though I had to take a break from it I found it compelling enough to return to it. So far a good read.

Vyasa’s Mahabharata seems to be the obvious guess… or are we missing something? I looked at this and thought, ‘It can’t be that simple’ …

There is something about that bird… I have read some story long ago about a bird that listened to vyasa’s narration of the mahabharatha and still had a lot of questions. I don’t remember the details tho’… I should ask my sister – she’s the one who knows mythology better in our family!

So combining both, my answer is “The Great Indian Novel” by Shashi Tharoor. Haven’t read the book but I know it talks about Mahabaratha.
