Says Shruthi and it truly is a subject close to my heart.
My worst nightmare is all the trash collecting to heaps and humankind drowning in it. Before throwing things, I try my hand on turning them in to something that can be reused. Some of these are imitation of what serious crafters have done, some are my versions of what I read.
I would like to dedicate all these projects to my wonderful glue gun without which many of these projects would not have been possible. My colleague encouraged me to get a glue gun and once I used it there was no turning back. Spread news papers to cover working surface, gather the materials and lock ‘n’ load glue gun, every single time I feel like Laura Croft 🙂
Created so far…..
CD Many Ways
(1)CD Coasters1: Children’s art work on one side(cut to size and laminated) and left over flannel scraps on the other side. A birthday gift for the children’s teacher.
(2)CD Coasters2: I am having a serious love affair with burlap these days. I have been saving the burlap bags in which they sell rice. The big idea was to make a bag. But considering my non existent needle skills, I decided to turn them in to coasters. I loved the result. Especially the coasters that show tamil letters and words such as INDIA and IDLY put a smile on my face.
(3)CD Coasters3: I made some ‘very Indian’ art work on these CDs. I had to sand and prime the CDs for the acrylic paint to stick on the CDs. The big idea is to make these in to ornaments for the children’s teacher’s christmas tree.
(4)Another CD project: The girls painted a ready made bird house(thanks Reva) and I just added this to the birdhouse and hung it.
Gerber Bottle Many Ways
(1)It’s A Boy Party Favor: R’s nephew had a baby boy in May and I mailed these party favors for their baby announcement. I sterilized the bottle and the lids, painted the lids, added some IT’S A BOY ribbon and buttons on the top.
(2)Party Favors-Candle and Candy Jars: We had so much baby food bottles that I was looking for something else to do with it and I stumbled on this. Loved it. The candle votive holders looked really pretty with vibrant yarn. But I decided to use the left over baby blanket/sweater yarn I had.
Tetra Pak Containers – Tetra Paks cannot be recycled or composted. I try to buy the gallon cans, but sometimes, cannot avoid tetra paks. When I throw them in to the trash can, I feel guilty. I saw this simple project in FamilyFun magazine. All it requires is hardy scissors and sticky back velcro. I use these as food containers, especially when I want to give a friend some food without having to chase the person to get my containers back.
Brown Bags To Envelopes: I carry my own bags for bringing back groceries, but paper grocery bags tend to collect over a period of time. Brown bags are pretty hardy and are perfect for little hands that learn to wield a brush. But the girls are grown up and want real paper for painting. So I converted my collection of brown bags to envelopes.
Fuse Bead Greeting Cards: The girls do fuse bead work. We have a ton of fuse bead art work, which I am turning in to hand made greeting cards.
Soup Can Pencil Holders and Big Metal Can Planters: This is just for home use and I used them as is.

Great post! I especially love the CD coasters and those painted with Indian designs, stunning! I have recently thought of buying rice in those cloth bags just because I really love the bags they come in! But since I try to serve my family brown rice, I guess I’ll just have to keep dreaming!
I was interested to see that you are living in Northern California, I was born and raised in Berkeley! And interestingly enough, I today looked at the statistics for my blog, and 25% of my total traffic comes from California, which I really can’t explain! All the best!
UTBT SAYS: Thanks for your kind words Sara.
I grew up eating polished white rice. So the switch to stand alone brown rice will never happen at home front. However I mix 60%-40% white and brown to increase the fiber content.
Lot of crafters and homeschooling mamas in CA, what else to say 🙂
Need I say you are one amazingly talented lady and have ultra talented kids!!! All the stuff you have shown here is amazing! I love the Indian looking CD’s, what a way to turn trash to treasure! I hope I can find the time to implement them one day!!!
The brown paper bag envelopes and the Gerber bottle projects are so awesome! Where were you all these challenges?
What are fused beads? Do enlighten!
UTBT SAYS: Thanks Shankari. I am finding it increasingly difficult to craft on a regular basis. Most of the crafting is reserved for birthday parties, making handmade gifts etc. So I usually miss deadlines to challenges 🙂
Fuse beads are god given and the person who came up with this idea deserves a Nobel (for peace preferebly) prize. Without these to engage them for hours(no joke, they can sit with it for a good two hours) the kids would have gone mad and driven me mad. Check out http://www.perlerbeadstore.com/index.html
The plastic beads go on pegboards and then you iron it on both sides to heat-fuse the plastic beads. Last golu our bottom step was filled with perler beads stuff created by the kids. Available in Michales and IKEA. Do try it, it is fun not just for kids but also for parents.
Very nice !!!
I used the gerber bottles as party favors as well …. filled them with Raisin chocolates and tied a bow around … 🙂
I am so glad you are able to re-use … my latest woe is that the girls are wasting too much paper in the name of artwork. I need to be more creative to re-use stuff around the house.
UTBT SAYS: Gerber bottles are cool aren’t they?
Chk out http://www.camilledawn.com/2010/02/art-re-purposed.html (thru http://www.creativejewishmom.com/2010/07/welcome-to-c.html).
If it is art made at art class, I save them. At home, usually paper is one side printed paper. I save the good ones, the milestone art art work and the rest, I tape together and use as gift wrapping paper.
The younger one is having a fling with scissors. So she grabs a construction paper, cuts a teeny shape out of it and discards the rest. I am seriously considering soaking the like colors and making home made paper. I don’t know when it will happen though.
CD coasters 3 art work is awesome…It looks so beautiful
:-)). Great recycling ideas, Utbt.
UTBT SAYS: Thanks Ranjani.
Awesome. Putting them up now! 🙂
UTBT SAYS: Thanks Shruti.
Fantastic! I’m most impressed:)
UTBT SAYS: Thanks mam 🙂
Wonderful! How come you don’t show me the CD coasters when I was there? They are awesome! Can I get an advanced Bday present or belated?
UTBT SAYS: The one with the girl’s art work, we did it in March. You saw the burlap coasters. The one with the paintings is complete only on one side, thats why I didn’t show you.
WOwoww…i am very very impressed with the envelopes…amazing..where do you find the time and energy?
UTBT SAYS: Thanks. Its summer vacation and I have some time to spare.
WOW! Awessssome! This looks soooo pro! I just love the coaster idea – am gonna try it out…
And the tetrapack – such a simple idea to reuse it…
UTBT SAYS: Do try Uma. Would love to see your spin on the CDs.

UTBT SAYS: Yes, will get started on that.

Woweee ! Super reuse of stuff – esp. the cartons !
One contest for you and one for the rest of the folks !
UTBT SAYS: Thanks PV. Most of the ideas are borrowed. Reuse put to use to the core 🙂
Superb,blown away by your talent.
If i could borrow something from you,it would be your art n craft stuff.
UTBT SAYS: Thanks.
Wow…I particularly liked the envelopes. I’ll use the idea. these crafts are also a great way to get the kids involved in.
UTBT SAYS: Thanks Hema.
Really nice stuff. I’m impressed by the different reuse ideas!
Being a Tetra Pak employee, I just have to point out that Tetra Pak cartons are indeed recyclable, and in many cases also recycled, but it depends on where you live.

UTBT SAYS: Thanks for dropping by and for the link Tobias. Where we live, tetra paks, esp the ones with plastic spouts, go in the garbage. Will update or do a new post with your link about recycling tetra pak. It is good to know.
I bow to thee lady.
UTBT SAYS: Thanks. You guys are nice.
Am gone for a few weeks and what do I see when I get back???! Wow.. you are simply amazing girl! You made your glue gun proud!
Loved the bird houses 😀 The Indian art cd ornaments are awesome. And I am so going to steal your tetra pack idea..
Shopping bags and carrier bags made of plastic have been popularly replaced by paper bags in many establishments.
Now, the those bags have been further delimited to recycled ones.
Unlike plastic bags however, that cause health and environmental repercussions because of the toxins from the plastic when disposed of and recycled improperly, those bags including recycle bags pose no threat to us and the environment.
Oh my goodness this is some GREAT recycling. And I am especially drawn to the CD art as I have a DJ and an artist in this house. Let’s see if not only our relationship works well, but our arts as well 😉 Thank you for the inspiration!
UTBT SAYS: Thanks for your kind words Kim.
I was browsing through your web space.
http://kimminita.blogspot.com/2010/08/light-in-head.html – had me floored. Awesome concept and it is so interesting how life experiences inspire art.
wow that was some great stuff!!! am off to trying some of it with my son. thanks for sharing.
UTBT SAYS: Thanks Naina.
