So its been a week.
I have finished my parent information sessions and started two of my book clubs.
So far the response has been good.
The parent information session – HOW TO RAISE A READER? spoke mostly about the early literacy skills that we are targeting by reading. I had a good mix of veteran parents and first time mothers. Good thing I was affirmedΒ of is that I can talk, not a big surprise if you know me, but I can talk with substance for an hour and beyond. Now that can be a surprise for people who know me π
The MYTHOLOGY book club, I have about 12 children. So we got talking about Shiva. One child asked me if Shiva’s moon is so small that it is smaller than the snake around his neck or if the snake is huge, as big as the moon. My reply was, ‘May be it is a huge snake. May be it is a small moon. But if the snake is so huge, how big do you thing Shiva is and do you think he will still fit on Kailash?’ Then we got started taking about the what does the moon mean? Is the moon just a moon or is it a message that means something? What do you think peeps, small moon or big snake?!
My BUTTERFLIES CLUB for 6 – 9 is the best π They are at the age that they look at you with so much admiration when you talk. So the story, ONCE UPON A LIBRARY, something I made up and sketched out for 20 min, went on for 30 min! Hey, they were listening, so I added more voices, more modulation and more drama. Couldn’t help it. Chula is in this club and Meija suddenly became joined to her at the hip. So they both were there. I had to place them at diagonally opposite corners of the room, of course, cardinal rule of managing siblings. But Chula was this, ‘Yes, I have read that. If you read that, you would love…., You HAVEN’T read even this?!!!! How come this is the best book ever. Amma, tell them about …… book. We own this no? I read it 10 -15 times, even if it is for age 10+, no problem, I have read it.’ Poor thing was genuinely interested, but it could be a overdose for other people. So had to keep her on a leash.
The coming week, my MYTHOLOGY club and BUTTERFLIES are having Skype sessions with Anu Kumar and Sandhya Rao respectively. Very excited.

Waaah. I want to come with my two.
And dont shush Chula okay? Reader-type kids rarely get a chance to open them mouths. Let her show it is a very cool thing to do.
UTBT SAYS: Three more sessions left. Wanna come?
Yup, know all about the reading types that are difficult to ‘put on a leash’ as soon as they set their heart on yammering about their books. Both kid and mom. Especially if they are reading an un-identified number of books at a given time, with book-marked books lying in the bedroom, in the kitchen, on the dining table, on the sofa, on the…you get it? Yes, I see you do.
UTBT SAYS: Tell me abt this unidentified amt of books thingy. Running out of book marks at home. Uffff!
UTBT I really miss reading Indian mythology to my kids .I live in USA what would you suggest for ppl like me who wants to read the new creative indian writers young kid books being sold in India but we dont have access to them that often.
UTBT SAYS: Age of kids and county where you live? Share over email(utbtkids@gmail.com) if appropriate.
Cool sessions! Way to go girl!!
UTBT SAYS: Danke.
I had the same question as pmom. For a 5yr old who is absolutely thrilled about mythology, in Seattle, what would be a a good resource? I was hoping to buy some Amar Chitra Kadha books…but the store that used to sell them, doesn’t anymore π Any suggestions are greatly appreciated UTBT. Oh and btw, your doing an amazing job.
UTBT SAYS: A handful of title I came with after scouring Seattle Public Lib. *Disclaimer Alert*, have Sanjay Patel and Uma wonly. Some(Budhha one) I have heard abt. Guessing that some you might have to read and retell to your child, considering that he is 5.

UTBT SAYS: All in May.
10+ MYTHOLOGY, May 1, 8, 15. 11.30AM – 12.30AM
1st and 15 is a must, IMO. 1st, we are meeting Anu Kumar, author of Mythquest series.
15th we are meeting Harini Gopalswami Srinivasan.
8th, I am conducting the session, talking abt perspectives in Mythology. Ex, Vaali narrating Ramayana, how will it be? Sita narrating Ramayana, how will it be. Does the story depend on the teller?
BUTTERFLIES for 6 – 9 age grp. May 5, 12, 19th. 10.00AM – 11.00AM
Way to go girl! Do you have a video recording of your story session? Pls share.
And eagerly awaiting the snake vs moon explanation π
UTBT SAYS: Probably moon is no a moon. Snake is not a snake. May be it is a symbol for some message the pictorial representation of Shiva is telling us.
I am oh-so-jealous of Hyderabad that i could do a Kannagi avatar..but then that doesn’t really help me(plus never interrupt a reading child is what i believe in) so I shall just rue what I am missing and try to copy the same here at home.
Will you be in Chennai anytime during late summer? Could you do a similar one there in July/Aug so we could attend π
UTBT SAYS: No plans as of now. But couple of organizations wanted me to let them know if I am going to be in Chennai, so that we can plan something. Will see.
phew. im so glad its going well. was kinda holding my breath for you! π
dear boo, move to bangalore. we will then blackmail utbt to move here or at least do the sessions here.
