More summer fun 2010 posts.
Kolams with my amma. This particular day, they were experimenting on writing letters with the cylinder shaped kolam maker. They were writing the first letter from our names, that explains the ASS you see a the bottom right 🙂

nice.. the pic looks like R.V.S.S to me.. no? did you get the kolam powder from India?
UTBT SAYS: Indian stores rice flour.
This used to be one of my favourite pass time growing up.
Did you use Rangoli powder or other substitutes for this activity?
UTBT SAYS: We used good old Indian stores rice flour. My amma says a 50-50 mix of kolam powder from India(it is much coarser apparently) and rice flour will be ideal.
Too cute ! The arisi mavu and kola acchu bring back a flood of memories
UTBT SAYS: What we enjoye we tend to pass it on to the kids-na?
How strange. ASS is the first letter of my two siblings and me by the order of birth 🙂
UTBT SAYS: Aa-ha, another ASS family.
I thought so … Rice flour it is in our house too 🙂
I have been thinking about trying it with colored sand … not sure how that will turn out.
UTBT SAYS: Hm, now that is an idea. I have half pound of plain sand sitting at home.
achu kolam thani azhagu dhaan 🙂 You sure have had a very fun filled summer so far!
UTBT SAYS: Fun-o-fun than. Sirippa-sirichahu, school arambichachu. Yenakku ore jolly-o-jimkhana than.
Nalla idea,will implement on need.
UTBT SAYS: It is a neat activity. Though it has taken them quite some time to get to this point. Initially they just dumped the flour and put their fingers on the pile. Now they know that if the flour gets over the activity is over and also have practice in making a shape. So be ready for lot of broom work in the initial learning stage.
What a neat idea. This also goes on my to-buy list when I go to India. Na would love the cylindrical one. Like others said, this one brings a flood of memories 🙂
I have tried kolams with coloured sand and they come out very well. Maybe you should give it a shot.
UTBT SAYS: Color sand it is then. And i thought you were already in India.
Where can I find these acchu’s here in the USA? I want them for the poojai each morning and I cannot find it. My mother and grandmother used to use particular ones each day of the week. Suggestions anyone?
UTBT SAYS: I don’t know where you are based. In the Bay Area, I have seen it in India Cash and Carry, Sunnyvale. Also worth trying in Poojamart, Fremont and Komalavilas, Sunnyvale.
