I am in the middle of switching pediatricians. Well, the old doctor was close to the place where we lived 1.5 years back and I have been lazy and putting off changing pediatricians for soooo long. Eventually I decided to get it done. Also the old pediatrician was getting too busy to spend a decent amount of time during the appointments. Most of the time when I call him for an appointment for cold or rashes or fever, his standard response used to be,“Oh, don’t worry, you don’t have to come, there is a bug going on. Just give them plenty of fluids and they will be okay” What kind of response is this? The rash turned out to be chicken pox and the cold had already turned in to a nasty ear infection.
Any ways, found this new pediatrician close to where I live. Hubby’s cousin and another friend vouched for Dr.P. Yesterday was the first appointment with the doctor – just getting to know the doctor. I was briefing the doctor about how Chula and Mieja don’t drink milk, they are okay with yogurt, but they have a strict “NO MILK” policy and that they are on antacids for acid reflux. The doc tells me, “Wait a minute. May be they are allergic to milk. May be it makes them feel uneasy, that’s why they don’t want milk. May be milk is causing acid reflux, gas and fussiness. Acid reflux is just a symptom. Zantac treats the symptom. We must find the cause and treat it. Let us try Lactaid. Since it does not have Lactose, may be they will do okay. If not let us try Soy ”.
So in the UTBT household, we will be experimenting with organic Lactaid, Soy and the likes of it. Funny, how I never thought of this possibility. Even now I find it hard to come to terms with the possibility of lactose intolerance in Chula and Mieja. When I was young, I was exactly like them, I used to throw up every single meal and drive my mother up the wall. Some how when I turned 8 I grew out of it. Any how, keeping fingers crossed to a throw-up-free future, where everything in the house smells like….ahhh…not-throw-up!

Just came across your blog – i know quite a few people who have turned off milk b/c it doesn’t agree with them…curious, post how the Lactaid works for your family. I’ve believe it’s better than switching to Soy because Soy isn’t actually milk – are you using the Lactaid Milk or the Lactaid Supplements?

what?? so if your kid is on a no-milk policy, it could be lactose intolerance?? but wont u see certain symtpoms – like in infants, excessive spit up, and in older kids, loose stools – something??
the acid reflux/throwing up is a new thing right? not there from birth?
hope the new method brings you a throw-up free house…
Hi Barbara, welcome to my blog. Today was the first day with Lactaid. We are still to find out if it really works and if Lactose intolerance is really the cause.
Kodi’s mom, acid reflux, spit up, throw up, extreme gassiness have been there since birth for both Chula dn Mieja. As I had mentioned, I still doubt if they are really lactose intolerant, but I am willing to give it a shot. Just too tired of cleaning up behind the girls. Every feeding session is turning in to a nightmare.
oh, I didn’t realize that – that these problems were around from day 1. in that case, i am really surprised that the old ped didn’t even suggest the idea all this while! hmm…anyway, hope lactaid rescues you and the kids from the misery!!
Hi
My son has acid reflux and eczema (from month1). The 1st thing my ped tried was asking me to stop having all dairy products. I had to read the labels in all processed food, you will be amazed to find that it is so hard to find food without any milk related stuff in it (It is a different story that it did not work, even after me abstaining from a big list of allergy causing foods for couple of months). Ped told me that food allergy is a major reason for eczema and can contribute towards acid refulx as well. Lactose intolerance and food allergy are 2 different things. Lactose intolerance will cause loose stools, extreme gassiness and pain, sometimes diarrhea because of the undigested lactose(milk sugar) reaching the intestine. Daiy allergy is caused by sensitivity towards milk protein. Though immature digestive system is the major reason for acid refulx in babies(LES not working as it should be), food allergy, spicy food can also cause it or aggravate it. Soy also did not work for my son. I don’t know about lactaid. Let us know how it worked.
Hi Anitha, nice to hear from you. When my elder daughter was born, my then ped(we switched ped when my elder daughter was 6 months old) suggested that I try a no dairy diet too. So I know how tough it is and what ou are going through. The no dairy diet did not help in any way. Because of the acid reflux, the child wanted to suck on something all the time, the ped kept telling that I do not have sufficient milk supply, there was this whole harmones/post partum depression/feeling in adqueate thingy going on…..Oh boy! I am glad that those times are beind me.
So far I am convinced that acid reflux might be because of immature digestive track/something the kids eat. But I am not sure if it is becauseof milk. May be the ped is trying to systematically eliminate the cause and has sarted with dairy. Lactaid, so far, I don’ know, I am not able to say for sure if it has helped. Will keep you posted.
So has the little one’s eczema improved?
