I don’t watch TV very much. It is not that I am opposed to TV. Every night for the past few years, the ritual has been unaltered. The girls are in bed, I clean up. R and I settle on the couch to catch up on TV. I get my fluffy pillow, my cozy blanket, put my legs on R’s lap and get ready to watch TV. But invariably, within 20 min, I am asleep.
Sat/Sun are slightly better, I can manage an hour of TV before my eyes seal shut. But there are some gems that I catch before I drift off. I often find myself pondering over the snippets. Just wanted to share the gyaan with you all.
Michael J Fox in The Late Show With David Letterman
“There’s a difference between acceptance and resignation. I’ve accepted that this is my situation, but I’m not resigned that it has to be that way always.“
Star Trek Next Generation, Episode: The Host
Governor Leka Trion: Listening is a skill which seems to have evaporated with the heat of argument.
Riker Odan: Speak softly, Governor. Those who cannot hear an angry shout may strain to hear a whisper.
Current favs at home: The Mentalist, Star Trek Next Generation, Monk, The Late Show, Daily Show, Colbert Report, Top Chef, Next Food Network Star, Next Iron Chef, The Great Food Race.
I can confidently say that I have watched the first 15 min of most of these shows.

The heart swells with pride and joy on seeing you quote from TNG
UTBT SAYS: Dude, they have explored some heavy stuff under the disguise of sci-fi. Guess this comment officially makes me a geek.
No TV in our house … I watch “Survivor” online … though I think its waste of time this season.
UTBT SAYS: 🙂
Do you hulu? I catch most of these shows on Hulu, never watch them during the actual showtime. Agree with you – under the garb of sci-fi, most of these shows explore deeper issues…
UTBT SAYS: Subtitles, that is why I don’t do Hulu. The husband likes to build linux boxes. His recent time pass is a media center he built. The box has DVR capabilities, scrapes sites with videos and streams it in(again I hit the subtitle roadblock), also it plays audio/video files from networked computers.
Loved the highlighted quotes! always struggle with the acceptance part, but it helps to know the difference from resignation. Hope rules!!
UTBT SAYS: Remember the quote about, ‘Change the things you can, recognize the things you cannot and accept it’? It used to sound defeatist, esp after going through nasty things beyond your control. But now I understand that acceptance is not the same as giving up. I am looking for acceptance, hopefully I get it without another nasty life lesson.
oh wow… Why are all husbands like this? 😛 I have learnt to live (rather watch) without subtitles and hence, I love Hulu as I find them a lot more efficient, time-wise – 30 min shows are condensed to 21-22 mins and hour long ones usually run for about 43-45 mins – and I actually don’t mind the 30 sec ad intermission 🙂
UTBT SAYS: Let me see. We have box 1, that has separate modules for doing the recording, streaming, digital processing etc. But it is bulky. So box 2 was built. This is sleek and compact, but the trade off is, same modules do a bunch of things, so at times there is a lag between audio and video. So, efficiency improvement is going on and he has succeeded in getting it up to speed. But every time the damn TV is switched on, a different light bulb comes on in his head w.r.t efficiency improvement and he proceeds to download drivers and tweaking it. Hullo…. I sleep off in 15 min remember?! So I have given up TV, I go to bed with a book and he goes to bed with his DVR.
Lol. You’re like my mom. So it would typically take you up to 10 days to watch a regular 2.5 hour Tamizh movie? 🙂
UTBT SAYS: Yes. But very few Tamil movies make me want to come back and watch it. So at times it is a blessing. I love sleeping with white noise 🙂
